Adventures in Stupidity

Saturday, May 25, 2024 | 2 minute read

The year is 2004. I’m feeling all smug and proud of my shiny new blue car. I'm in Washington, DC, trying to park in one of the tightest, most claustrophobic parking lots ever. I think I’ve got it all under control until, whoops, I turn the steering wheel just a smidge too much. And then it happens: the dreaded "zzzx" sound as some tiny, pointy thing on the wall decides to give my car a new custom paint job. Genius move, right? I mean, how stupid can I be?

We all have our moments of brilliance, right? Unfortunately, mine tend to be moments of brilliantly executed stupidity. So, let me regale you with the epic saga of my ongoing battle with common sense, where I turn everyday activities into a series of unfortunate events.

Spill Wine on Laptop

Ah, another day in the life. My laptop is open and gleaming, just waiting for me to wrap up work for the day. After a stressful day filled with meetings and projects, I waltz in with a wine glass in hand. Because, of course, mixing electronics and alcohol is a stellar idea. As I'm about to ask if anyone wants to order pizza, my wine decides it's time to make a grand entrance—all over my laptop. Yep, just like that, my laptop is swimming in Merlot, and my workday is officially over. Brilliant move, right?

Break Your New iPhone

And then there's the tale of my brand new iPhone. Fresh from the Apple Store, I walk out with it sparkling in the sunlight. I strut around, showing it off like it’s the latest fashion accessory, and bam! I drop it. Everyone around me stops to witness my misery. As I pick it up, there’s a minor scratch. It might have been minor, but to me, it was a glaring reminder of my unparalleled ability to mess things up. Duh!

So, what's the lesson here? Maybe it's that life has a funny way of reminding you that, no matter how hard you try, you’re just one silly mistake away from a facepalm moment. Or maybe it’s that I should really reconsider my life choices. Either way, here’s to the absurdity of it all, and to hoping my next brilliant moment is at least a little less disastrous.
